How might we facilitate a conversation about public space with New Yorkers?

PROJECT BACKGROUND

This project was conducted with a group for Project Facilitation Methods and Collaborative Project Studio at Parsons.
The goal of the project was to design and facilitate a dialogue about public space including voices from The New School Community and beyond.
Our team decided to focus on Parks in New York City.

We started with identify stakeholder. The research interviews focused on The New School Communit and community organizations.
Our goal is to identify the gaps and opportunities for meaningful dialogue through the interviews.

IDEATION

After we had difficulty in getting responses and people to interview from our initial outreach, our team pivoted to focus on low-barrier-to-entry forms of participation in the dialogue we were looking to foster. Our team began to reframing our mindset. We started to re-defining the brief, identifying the right questions and decided to come up with the project “Dial-A-Park”.

Our design process includes from Ideation, feedback to iteration.

PROJECT

Inspired by podcasting voicemail services. With Dial-A-Park, we ask New Yorkers to call a park and leave a voicemail telling the space what they love about it and what they wish were different. To create a form of dialogue, we created a website to host these voicemails and allow participants to hear what others think and build off of those ideas as well.

We collected over 45 voicemails from participants. We created a word cloud and map of the mentioned parks from these results.  All the voicemails and other assets created are available on our website.
